Identifying your Ford differential

Ford axles carry a metal tag, usually held on by a cover bolt. Two layouts are common.

Newer tag. The top line is the plant code and model number, for example S260A: "S" is the Sterling plant and "V" is Van Dyke, 260 is the model and the last letter is the revision. The bottom line reads, left to right:

Gear ratio: 3 27 means 3.27. A letter L in the ratio (3L27) means a limited slip differential.
Ring gear size: 75 means a 7.5 inch ring gear.
Build date: year, month letter and day, for example 0D04.

Older tag. The top line is the axle model with its prefix and suffix, for example WDL-W, plus a number shown only when interchangeability is affected. The bottom line gives the ratio (3.00 conventional, 3L00 Traction-Lok), the date built as year, month and week (3A2), and a plant code (105).

Reading the date code

Ford date codes run year, month, day, with the month as a letter: A for January, B for February, C for March and so on. A tag reading 13B07 means February 7, 2013. The letters I and O are skipped so they are not confused with 1 and 0.
