What the differential does in a CAT machine

The differential sits in the drive train between the transmission and the axles. It turns the power coming from the transmission 90 degrees so the axles can be driven, and it lets the left and right axles turn at different speeds and carry different torque. When the machine turns, the outside wheel has to travel farther than the inside wheel, and the differential makes that adjustment. It also reduces speed and multiplies torque on the way to the wheels.

Caterpillar designs these components to work together as a system under the loads of its equipment, and many of them are built to last more than one life.

Rebuild before it fails

Because the gears and shafts in a CAT differential are made for multiple lives, a unit that is looked after can go through more than one rebuild. Catching wear early, before a gear set or bearing lets go and damages the housing, usually means a smaller repair bill and more of the original parts reused. If a differential starts making new noise, have it looked at before it gets worse.
